Palazzo Barberini's Secret?

Spent hours wandering the halls, completely mesmerized by Caravaggio's paintings, seriously, the detail! But I noticed something odd... there were these little, almost hidden alcoves tucked away in some of the less-trafficked areas. They looked like they might have held something...significant. My guide didn't mention them. Anyone know what's up with those hidden nooks? Were they storage closets or something more interesting? I'm dying to know!

Not storage, no. Those alcoves were part of the original design for displaying smaller pieces from the Barberini collection, things like bronze statuettes and antique cameos. The current museum setup focuses on the big paintings but back in the day every one of those spots held something valuable. If you go back, take a closer look at the ceiling in the main gallery, the illusionistic architecture by Pietro da Cortona is even more impressive than the hidden nooks.

Those alcoves? Probably just storage, honestly. Old palaces are full of them, places to stash linens, extra furniture, maybe even the occasional illicit bottle of something...strong. Guides usually stick to the main attractions. It's a shame they didn't mention them, though. Makes you wonder what was in there, huh? You should of checked out the secret passage behind the Raphael paintings though, that's the real hidden gem!

Oh those little alcoves are actually part of the original 17th century layout, they used to display small sculptures or hold candles to create dramatic shadows. The Barberini family loved that theatrical lighting effect.

What are current tobacco prices for LM Blue or Chesterfield Blue?

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
