The vise exists. I've seen it. It's not out on the floor, you have to ask for Stefano, the older guy who works mornings. He keeps the really old stuff in a glass case behind the counter near the back, not a hidden room or anything dramatic. The clockmaker's vise is in there alongside some antique brass levels and a few hand-forged chisels that look like they could be from the 1800s. If you're polite and mention your grandpa, Stefano might let you hold it, but don't expect to buy it.
yeah i've been a couple times, it's more about the vibe than any actual secret room lol. the guys who work there are super old school and will dig out weird stuff if you ask nice, i once saw them pull out a set of rusted carpentry tools that looked roman era, probably just old but still cool
Nah, no secret catalog. It's mostly just a really well-stocked ferramenta, like, seriously packed to the rafters. The "secret warehouse" thing is probably just old wives' tales... or maybe clever marketing. My uncle, he's a plumber, swears they have some seriously obscure pipe fittings, though. Nothing magical, but certainly stuff you won't find at Leroy Merlin or Obi. Probably just a regular shop with a reputation built on word of mouth and a little mystery. Still, worth a look, if only for the atmosphere. The Pantheon's nearby, so you could make a day of it.

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits
Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.
LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
