Absolutely breathtaking mosaics, seriously. But I noticed something odd, a small, almost hidden chamber near the main structure. It was sealed off, no obvious way in. Anyone know the story behind that sealed-off room? Was it ever accessible? It felt like a secret waiting to be unlocked....

That's fascinating! I've been to the Ninfeo many times, and I've never even noticed a sealed-off chamber. Maybe it's a later addition, something built after the main structure fell into disrepair? Or perhaps it was always intended as a sort of service area, maybe for storing materials or tools used in maintaining the mosaics? It would be cool to find some historical records about it... maybe check the archives of the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma? They might have some plans or documentation that sheds light on it. Good luck with your detective work!

Honestly, I think that chamber might just be an old service tunnel from when they dug around for the aqueduct. There's a ton of underground stuff in that area that got bricked up over the centuries. You'd probably need to dig through the city archives to find any old maps of it.

You're right to be curious about that sealed chamber. I've read somewhere that it was likely a cella soliaris, a room designed to hold the machinery for the water features and fountains that once fed into the main nymphaeum. The mosaics you admired are mostly original, but that back room was probably closed off in the 19th century when they reinforced the structure after some flooding from the nearby Aqua Claudia. It's a shame, because you'd need a serious restoration permit to get in there now.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
