It looks amazing in photos, all old stone and ivy. The thing is, online reviews are practically nonexistent! I'm hoping to find some quiet spot to study, maybe even sketch. Anyone know if it's open to the public at all, or is it strictly for students? I'd hate to make a pilgrimage just to be turned away at the gate. Plus, any tips on nearby cafes with good espresso? My research only brought up tourist traps.

The school is definitely a working school, not a tourist site. It's run by the Salesian order and they are pretty strict about keeping the grounds for students and staff. I live near Monteverde Vecchio and walk past it sometimes, you can see the courtyard from the gate but that's about it. For sketching, the view from the Gianicolo terrace just up the hill is better anyway and completely open.

Skip the cafes in Trastevere proper, they are all overpriced. Walk toward Piazza San Cosimato, there is a bar called Caffe San Cosimato that does a solid espresso for 1 euro and has a few tables outside. The pastries are decent too.

Wow, that sounds incredibly picturesque! Scuola San Giovanni Evangelista is a real find. I've never heard of it, but those old stone buildings with ivy... swoon. Unfortunately, a lack of online reviews probably means it's either very exclusive, or just under the radar. You might have to email the school directly, their website might have contact info? Failing that, just show up. Worst case scenario, you have a lovely walk and some good sketching material from the outside.

As for cafes... @Rome is overflowing with tiny, almost hidden places. Instead of focusing on reviews (which are often skewed towards tourists), wander around Trastevere or Monti. Those neighborhoods are brimming with local spots. Look for places that are small, maybe a bit worn, and have lots of locals hanging out. That's your best bet for amazing espresso that isn't going to break the bank. Good luck!

honestly, another person looking for a "hidden gem" in rome. just show up, if you get turned away, that's your answer. tourists are a fact of life here, you prob won't find a quiet cafe, but sant'eustachio il caffe is right near

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
