What's the vibe like there? Is it eerie, peaceful, or just... underwhelming? I'm picturing crumbling walls and maybe some stray cats. Hoping for some serious Roman history feels, not just a bunch of broken bricks. Any tips for a first-timer would be awesome!

It's definitely less crowded than the Colosseum, that's for sure. The unfinished state adds to the atmosphere, it's not eerie, exactly, but it has a melancholic beauty. Think more "quiet contemplation" than "crumbling walls and stray cats" though, it's been reasonably well-maintained. You'll get that Roman history feel, but it's a different kind of experience than the major sites. Go early in the morning for the best light and fewest people. Also, check if there are any guided tours available, they often provide context that really brings the place alive. Enjoy!

Wow, that sounds amazing! Melancholic beauty is exactly the kind of vibe I'm hoping for. Definitely going early then, beat the crowds and all that. Thanks for the tip about the guided tours too, I hadn't even considered that. I'm picturing stunning sunrise photos already... Really appreciate the detailed response!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
