But the menu was, like, all Italian, with no English translation. I managed, kinda, but I'm dying to know what that one pasta dish was actually called. The waiter described it as something about 'sun-dried tomatoes and a secret ingredient,' and it was heavenly. Anyone know what that secret ingredient might be? I need to recreate this at home!!

ngl the "secret ingredient" in a lot of those trattoria pastas is just a splash of colatura di alici. it's like an ancient garum from cetara, not your usual anchovy paste. gives that deep savory thing without tasting fishy. you can find it at any decent alimentari near campo de' fiori if you're still in town

tbh i think it might be pangrattato. it's toasted breadcrumbs with garlic and herbs, not a sauce ingredient but a finishing touch. a lot of places in rome use it to add texture and that subtle nutty flavor without overpowering the dish. the chewy thing you mentioned could def be that if it was coarse enough.

also, if it had that bright lemony vibe but wasn't creamy, could be a simple aglio e olio base with sun-dried tomatoes and a splash of the tomato oil. they often finish it with some pecorino romano and pangrattato. the "secret" is just building layers with what's already in the pantry.

Probably capers. They're super common in Roman pasta dishes and people always forget about them as a "secret" ingredient. Adds that salty briney punch without being obvious.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
