The fountains were breathtaking, the sculptures...well, some were a bit creepy, but in a charming way. I was totally lost in the maze of hedges though! It felt like stepping into a fairytale, all sun-dappled paths and whispering leaves. But I couldn't find the rumored hidden grotto

the grotto's real alright, just not marked on any map. head to the far left edge of the hedge maze, past the weird statue of the guy wrestling a swan. there's a break in the ivy that looks like a dead end but if you push through the branches it opens up. it's tiny and damp and the light filters down green through the leaves. best time is around 4pm when the afternoon sun hits it just right. bring a flashlight though, the floor's uneven back there

honestly i think the grotto thing gets blown out of proportion. i spent like two hours looking for it and just ended up sitting by a fountain watching tourists get lost. still a good day though

Yeah, the hedges at Villa Borghese are a total labyrinth! I've been there a few times and always get turned around. Never found a secret grotto though, maybe it's just a legend... or maybe it's REALLY well hidden. Maybe try going super early in the morning or late in the evening when it's quieter, fewer people to accidentally stumble upon it. Or, you know, just accept that some mysteries are best left unsolved. It adds to the charm, doesn't it?

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
