It's... smaller than I expected, really tucked away. The carvings were incredible though, especially considering how old it is. I spent ages just staring at them, trying to imagine the guy who was buried there. What's the most interesting historical fact or legend connected to this tomb that most tourists miss? It felt like there was so much more to the story than what the information boards provided. Maybe something about his family, or how his tomb ended up so well-preserved? Any insider info would be awesome!

Honestly the wildest thing about that tomb is that the kid wrote poetry. Like the inscription on the side is actually a poem he composed about how he died before he could really live. It's not just some generic epitaph his parents picked out, it's his own words. That's insanely rare for a 12-year-old in ancient Rome, most kids that age were barely literate let alone writing verses. It gives the whole thing a way more personal feel than just another rich family's monument.

Wow, the Sulpicio Massimo tomb! I've been there too; total mood killer how small it is, huh? The detail on those carvings is insane though. Forget the official story, the real intrigue lies in the sheer luck of its survival. Most tombs from that era are totally looted and destroyed. This one's relatively untouched, which points to either some serious family clout (maybe connections to powerful folks we don't know about) or, and this is where it gets juicy, a really, really effective curse. Imagine! The family wanted this thing to stay untouched. That's way more interesting than some dry facts about the guy's lineage, right? It almost feels like it's guarded by something... just a thought!

The Quinto Sulpicio Massimo tomb is one of those rare roadside tombs that survived because it was literally buried under centuries of debris from the Tiber floodplain. Most of the Via Ostiense tombs were either stripped for building materials or just crumbled away. This one survived because the ground level rose around it, essentially sealing it in a protective cocoon of dirt and silt until it was excavated in the early 20th century. The carvings you saw are actually a pretty big deal because they show a scene from the Iliad, which was a common subject for educated Roman families, but it's unusually well-executed for a kid's tomb. His family was clearly loaded, probably from the Sulpician gens, one of the old patrician clans, and they wanted everyone passing by on the road to Ostia to know their twelve-year-old son was cultured and important.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
