San Lorenzo's Secret?

The bustling streets suddenly hushed as I entered the church. The cool, dim interior was a stark contrast to the city's heat. I was captivated by the quiet reverence, the aged stone, the scent of incense... but I couldn't find anything about the small, almost hidden chapel tucked away to the side. What's the story behind that little chapel? Is it dedicated to a specific saint, or holds some local legend? It felt ancient, almost forgotten.

honestly that little chapel is the Cappella di Santa Maria della Colonna, not super well known even among locals. it was added in the 1600s when they restored the church, and the column reference is about a miracle where a statue of Mary supposedly saved a kid from falling scaffolding during construction. most guidebooks skip it because it's easy to miss but the frescoes inside are from the 18th century, pretty faded but you can still see the old colors if you squint

might be the chapel of st lawrence himself since the church is named after him but tbh rome has a million hidden chapels like that. could just be a forgotten family burial spot

I think that tiny chapel is dedicated to Saint Michael, there's a faded painting of him up there if you look closely. My grandmother used to say people would stop in there to pray before crossing the city during the plague, kind of a last-minute blessing spot.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
