Seriously, those cobblestone streets are a maze! I ended up wandering for like an hour, almost completely lost. I finally stumbled onto a friendly local who pointed me in the right direction, but man, those little alleyways... They are something else. The trattoria was worth it, though, incredible pasta. My question is: what's the best, most foolproof way to navigate Trastevere without getting hopelessly lost next time?

ngl, i just use the church bells. santa maria in trastevere rings on the hour, and if you can hear it you're close to the main piazza. the further you wander, the quieter it gets, so you always know if you're heading in or out. also, via della paglia is the straightest shot from the piazza to the river, and it's way less crowded than the main streets. saved my ass more than once when i was late for dinner

the real trick is to use the river as your compass. trastevere is basically a peninsula with the tiber on two sides, so if you walk downhill you'll almost always hit the river. from there you can follow the lungotevere back to ponte sisto or ponte garibaldi. i've been going there for years and still take wrong turns, but knowing i can always bail out toward the water saves a lot of stress. also, for that specific area near nomentana, you're better off taking the tram 3 or 19 to the viale regina margherita stop instead of cutting through trastevere on foot.

honestly just pick a landmark and stick to it. i use santa maria in trastevere as my anchor, the piazza is hard to miss. if you're heading towards the river, follow the sound of vespas and you'll hit ponte sisto eventually. the trattoria you found was probably on a side street off via della lungaretta, that's where most of the good ones hide. next time just save the address on google maps offline, the signal can be spotty in those narrow alleys

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
