I've seen pictures, it's gorgeous. But I'm curious, what's the best way to avoid the crowds, especially on a weekend? I'm thinking of renting a bike but worried about navigating the paths with so many people. Any local tips on finding some quieter spots within the park? I'd love to find a secluded spot for a picnic and some people-watching, but without being the people being watched, you know?

The weekend crowds at Villa Borghese peak between 11am and 3pm, especially near the Galleria Borghese and the Pincio Terrace. If you're set on a bike, rent from one of the stands on Viale del Giardino Zoologico rather than the main gates, the paths there are wider and less congested. For a quiet picnic spot, walk past the Temple of Aesculapius toward the Giardino dei Lancieri, it's a small grassy area behind the Museo Carlo Bilotti that most tourists skip. The light filters through the pines nicely there and you can watch joggers on the main loop without feeling like you're in the middle of it.

Go early, like ridiculously early. Before the sun even thinks about properly rising. Seriously. Most people sleep in, even in Rome. You'll have a much better chance of finding a peaceful spot then. Plus, the early morning light in the Villa Borghese is magical. Rent a bike anyway, just be extra careful. The paths are generally pretty good, but early morning means fewer people and fewer bikes, so less chance of collisions. As for secluded spots... head towards the northern edge of the park, near the Casina di Raffaello. There are some quieter paths and hidden groves there. It's less manicured and more wild feeling. Good luck and enjoy your picnic!

honestly, skip the main park entrance altogether. if you come in from the via flaminia side near the bioparco, you'll hit the quieter gravel paths first. the bike rental guys on piazzale delle canestre are cheaper than the ones near the galleria, and they'll let you take the bikes up the little hill to the giardino del lago. that whole area around the lake has these tucked away benches behind the temple of aesculapius where the tour groups never wander. picnic there and you'll see everyone else fighting for selfie spots while you're just chilling in the shade

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
