I've heard stories... whispers, really, about the local Carabinieri. Are they as serious and by-the-book as they seem, or is there a bit more... character to them? I'm picturing a grumpy old sergeant with a heart of gold, maybe secretly baking cannoli on his lunch break. Is that wildly inaccurate? It's a totally unfounded fantasy I've created, I know. Hoping for less "Gomorrah" and more "charming Italian policemen with a soft spot for stray dogs".

nah you're not totally off base, there's a bit of both. the Nomentana crew is pretty standard for Rome carabinieri - professional but they've got that roman sarcasm that comes out if you're chill with them. i've seen them joking around with the barista at Caffe Tosto next door, they're human

but the cannoli thing is more of a sicily vibe. here in rome they're more likely to be sneaking a suppli from the fry shop on Via Livorno during their break. the stray dog thing is real though, there's this one older maresciallo who always has a biscuit in his pocket for the cats near Villa Torlonia

just don't test them on the paperwork side. they're super by the book with documents and traffic stuff, that's where the "gomorrah" comparison ends. but if you're just walking past, you'll prob catch them leaning on the station door smoking, looking like they're about to tell you the football scores

honestly the Nomentana station is a pretty busy spot, right on Via Nomentana so they deal with a lot of traffic and tourist stuff daily. the carabinieri there are def professional but i wouldn't call them warm and fuzzy, more like efficient and a bit tired of everyone's bullshit by 3pm. that said, i've seen a couple of them stop to help an old lady carry groceries across the street near Piazza Bologna, so maybe there's a tiny heart under the uniform. just don't expect any cannoli sharing, they're more likely to be sipping espresso at the bar on the corner during a quick break

Eh, probably closer to "by the book" than "secret cannoli baker," unfortunately. The Carabinieri are generally professional, but Nomentana's a pretty busy station. Don't expect a lot of "charming" unless your charming involves efficiently writing you a ticket for jaywalking. They're there to do a job, and they do it. Your Airbnb's location doesn't mean you'll have daily interactions though. Unless you're, like, accidentally parking on a tow-away zone. Then maybe you'll see their "character." They're not villains, just... very focused on their work.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
