It sounds odd, but the old graves are overgrown and the light filters through the trees in a way that feels more like a forest than a graveyard. The vendors are setting up under bare bulbs, and the steam from the morning porridge sellers makes a mess of contrast that's hard to beat. Just ask before pointing your camera at anyone, they're usually fine with it but appreciate a nod first.
If you want something quieter, the back alleys behind the Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman mosque have these faded Dutch-era shopfronts, half painted over, with laundry strung across. It's gritty but honest, and the late afternoon shadows stretch forever down those narrow lanes.
if you're okay with a bit of a climb, the water tower near Jalan Veteran gives a killer vantage over the whole city. it's not marked on maps, but locals know it, ask around at the warung below. the stairs are rusty as hell, so watch your step, but from the top you get this chaotic grid of rooftops and the river cutting through, especially good right after rain when everything's shiny.
another one that's kinda weird but works: the old ferry landing at Sungaijawi, just south of town. it's a working dock, tons of motorbikes and crates of fish, and the concrete ramp reflects weirdly at noon. not pretty, but the textures are insane, and you'll get real life, not postcard stuff. just don't block the loading, those guys move fast.
honestly skip the usual Equator Monument shots, everyone's got those. head to the Kapuas River walk near the old Chinese quarter around sunset, the light hits the wooden stilt houses and the passing boats real nice. also, the Taman Alun Kapuas area has this abandoned pier on the east side, locals use it for fishing but it gives u a clean silhouette of the river with zero crowds. if you're up for a drive, the rice fields in Siantan village, about 20 mins out, have these dramatic palm lines at golden hour, way better than anything in the city center. bring a wide lens for the river, the haze makes everything look moody but cool. oh and check the sky around 5am from the Pontianak bridge, the fog sits low over the water and it's dead quiet, only a few joggers around.
