Best day trips from Medan?
If you want something close and easy, the Taman Alam Lumbini area near Sibolangit is worth the 45 minute drive. It's a Buddhist temple complex with a giant seated Buddha and pagoda that feels completely different from the city, and the gardens are surprisingly well kept. After that you can stop at Durian Ucok on the way back if you're brave enough for the fruit, or grab a bowl of mie pangsit at one of the roadside stalls near the Pancur Batu intersection.
honestly i'd skip lake toba for a day trip, it's way too rushed. berastagi is solid but consider going a bit further to sipoholon near tarutung instead. there's a hot spring there called air panas that's less crowded than the ones near berastagi, plus the drive through the mountains is gorgeous with all the pine trees. you can grab a sate padang from a roadside warung on the way back, way better than the touristy stuff in town.
if you want something totally different, head to pematang siantar about 2 hours away. the pasar horas market is huge and chaotic but you'll find legit batak snacks like naniura (raw fish with herbs) and the old dutch-colonial buildings around jalan merdeka are cool for photos. not many tourists go there so it feels more authentic.
Lake Toba is technically doable in a day but you'll spend about 4-5 hours on the road each way, so I'd save that for a longer trip. For a proper day out, head to Berastagi early morning around 7am, grab some jagung bakar or fresh strawberry juice from the market, then hike Gunung Sibayak. The trail takes about 2 hours up and the crater views are worth it, plus there are hot springs near the base to soak your feet after. If you want something closer to Medan, the Tjong A Fie Mansion and Maimun Palace in the city center can be done in half a day with a batik workshop included.

I've lived here for a few years and the guide is solid. One thing I'd add is that the Tjong A Fie Mansion tour is worth the IDR 35,000 fee, the guides tell you stories about the secret tunnels under the house. If you're there on a Sunday morning, walk over to Lapangan Merdeka around 7am, there's a free tai chi class that anyone can join and the old Chinese guys will usually offer you tea after. Also for the night market near Kesawan, try the soto medan from the cart on the corner of Jalan Balai Kota, the lady has been making it for 20 years and she puts a whole boiled egg in for IDR 15,000.
good list, but if you're at maimun palace go early around 8am before the tour buses show up, you'll have the whole place to yourself for photos. also check out the old dutch cemetery nearby on jl. balai kota, it's overgrown and kinda creepy but tells a different side of medan history most tourists skip. for food, de cut mie pangsit on jl. yos sudarso has the best mie pangsit i've found, the broth is clear and rich and they make their own noodles, only idr 20k a bowl
the guide's spot on about mie aceh at seulawah but if u want the real deal go to mie aceh titi bobo on jl. krakatau ujung, it's spicier and they give u more kerupuk. also for bika ambon, skip the market ones and get it fresh from bika ambon zulaikha on jl. selamat, they bake it at 6am and it sells out by 9am so go early. one thing missing is the tip about angkot routes, they're confusing af so just use grab, especially when it rains cause becak drivers will charge u triple
