Finding peace in the chaos

It's supposed to be a pretty bustling place, right near the airport, and she keeps saying how much it's changed since she moved there 20 years ago. She's always talking about this amazing chai wallah down the street, but she can't remember the name... or where it actually is. My aunt is... shall we say, directionally challenged. Seriously, she once got lost going to the same grocery store twice in a row. So my question is: what's the best way to navigate Indian Airlines Colony without getting hopelessly lost, especially if you're not a local? I'm thinking of using a map, obviously, but any local tips on hidden shortcuts or landmarks would be a lifesaver. I really want to find that legendary chai!

ngl the colony is actually easier to navigate than most of mumbai because of the airport wall. if you keep the runway to your right you're heading towards Vile Parle station, left means you're going towards Andheri. for the chai guy, ask for the stall near the old IAC canteen, not the new one. everyone calls it bhaiya's but the canteen landmark is way more reliable than trying to describe the guy himself. the watchmen at the main gate of Indian Airlines Colony are usually pretty chatty if you ask them in the morning when they're having their own chai

the colony's actually pretty grid-like if you look at it from above, theres only a few main arteries and everything else branches off in a predictable way. the airport fence is your best friend for orientation - if you can see the runway through the chainlink you're on the eastern side, if you can't you're on the western side near the Vile Parle end. for the chai guy, ask for bhaiya near the Hanuman temple, every building watchman in that area knows exactly which one you mean, my friend used to live there and that's how we found it

just follow the noise honestly, the colony has this weird hum that changes pitch depending where you are. near the chai stalls it gets louder and more clattery. your aunt prob remembers the sound even if she forgot the location. ask for chai by the old air india sign, the blue one

I want to sell my old clothes

ngl the easiest way is to just hand them over to a scrapwala near your building, they'll sort through and take what they want, rest goes to recycling. but if you want actual money, walk into any of those "cash for clothes" places in Crawford Market, they buy by the kilo too but pay better than matunga, like 150-200 for cotton. just don't bring anything with stains or tears, they'll reject it outright and you'll waste your time hauling it there

fwiw you could also try the Instagram thrift stores that are based out of mumbai, like "bombay thrift store" or "mumbai thrift club". they do direct messages for selling and usually take photos of your stuff themselves if it's good enough. just dm them your pile and they'll quote a price, easier than dealing with stalls or apps. also, if you have any branded stuff, try the "luxury thrift" pages instead, they pay way better for zara or h&m than the general ones

The St. Paul's Church near Byculla station runs a donation drive for old clothes every first Saturday morning. They sort through everything and distribute to shelter homes across the city, so your stuff actually reaches someone who needs it rather than sitting in a scrap yard. Just drop off before 11am or the volunteers pack up for the day.
