Sion East Mysteries

My friend, who grew up near Sion Hospital, mentioned it vaguely, something about a shortcut, amazing vada pav, and a grumpy chaiwallah who makes the best ginger tea in the whole of Mumbai. Anyone know how to find this legendary lane? I'm determined to find it...I've already checked Google Maps, and it's not exactly obvious. It's gotta be something special if even my Mumbai-born friend won't spill the beans!

Your friend is talking about the lane that runs between the station's west end and the old Sion Fort wall. It's not marked on any map because it's basically a service path locals use to cut from the station to the hospital road. The vada pav stall you want is the one with the blue tarp and a single hanging bulb, right where the lane bends left. The chaiwallah sits about twenty feet further in, and yes, his ginger tea is famously sharp because he pounds fresh ginger into the pot right in front of you. The lane is most crowded between 6 and 8 PM, so go then if you want the full experience.

Honestly the lane you're looking for isn't even on Google Maps, it's like a secret passage that only shows up if you're walking from the station towards the fort wall. The vada pav guy with the blue tarp is legit, but the real gem is the bhajiya stall two steps past him, run by this old couple who've been there since the 90s. If you go around 5pm the chaiwallah's ginger tea hits different because he's just started his evening batch and the ginger's still super fresh.

ngl the easiest way to find it is to walk out of sion station's west exit and head towards the fort wall, but don't take the main road. there's a narrow gap between two paan shops that looks like a dead end, it's not. the chaiwallah's setup is literally a rusted cart under a flickering tube light, he won't smile at you but his tea's worth the grump. also, if you're there on a sunday morning, the lane's empty and you can actually see the old fort bricks behind the stalls, kinda cool if you're into that

I want to sell my old clothes

ngl the easiest way is to just hand them over to a scrapwala near your building, they'll sort through and take what they want, rest goes to recycling. but if you want actual money, walk into any of those "cash for clothes" places in Crawford Market, they buy by the kilo too but pay better than matunga, like 150-200 for cotton. just don't bring anything with stains or tears, they'll reject it outright and you'll waste your time hauling it there

fwiw you could also try the Instagram thrift stores that are based out of mumbai, like "bombay thrift store" or "mumbai thrift club". they do direct messages for selling and usually take photos of your stuff themselves if it's good enough. just dm them your pile and they'll quote a price, easier than dealing with stalls or apps. also, if you have any branded stuff, try the "luxury thrift" pages instead, they pay way better for zara or h&m than the general ones

The St. Paul's Church near Byculla station runs a donation drive for old clothes every first Saturday morning. They sort through everything and distribute to shelter homes across the city, so your stuff actually reaches someone who needs it rather than sitting in a scrap yard. Just drop off before 11am or the volunteers pack up for the day.
