Lost in Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar

I've been trying to navigate the local markets, so vibrant, full of spices and sounds I've never encountered before... but getting around is a maze! Are there any hidden, less-crowded routes or shortcuts locals use to get around more easily? I feel like I'm constantly bumping into people. Its beautiful, but hectic... I'm starting to think I need a map specifically for pedestrians, not cars. It's nothing like the organized streets back home.

tbh the trick is to not fight the crowd but to find the rhythm. early mornings around 7-8am the main market is still sleepy, you can actually see the shop fronts. around 5pm it's a wall of people so just avoid it entirely if you can

for shortcuts, the lane behind the big hanuman temple runs parallel to the main road and cuts out all the chaos. you'll pass a few chai stalls and a guy who fixes watches, it's quiet enough to hear yourself think. also if you need to get from the station end to the dharavi side, go through the compound of the old municipal school, there's a gap in the fence that opens into a residential lane. saves you 10 minutes of pushing through the fish market

if you're near the station side, cut through the colony lanes behind the masjid, way less foot traffic and you'll pop out right at the main veg market without the crowd crush

Honestly, just follow the older ladies carrying bags. They know all the little gaps between buildings that cut blocks in half, way faster than sticking to the main roads.

I want to sell my old clothes

ngl the easiest way is to just hand them over to a scrapwala near your building, they'll sort through and take what they want, rest goes to recycling. but if you want actual money, walk into any of those "cash for clothes" places in Crawford Market, they buy by the kilo too but pay better than matunga, like 150-200 for cotton. just don't bring anything with stains or tears, they'll reject it outright and you'll waste your time hauling it there

fwiw you could also try the Instagram thrift stores that are based out of mumbai, like "bombay thrift store" or "mumbai thrift club". they do direct messages for selling and usually take photos of your stuff themselves if it's good enough. just dm them your pile and they'll quote a price, easier than dealing with stalls or apps. also, if you have any branded stuff, try the "luxury thrift" pages instead, they pay way better for zara or h&m than the general ones

The St. Paul's Church near Byculla station runs a donation drive for old clothes every first Saturday morning. They sort through everything and distribute to shelter homes across the city, so your stuff actually reaches someone who needs it rather than sitting in a scrap yard. Just drop off before 11am or the volunteers pack up for the day.
