Lost Luggage at Mumbai Airport?

The whole journey was a blur of mediocre airline food and screaming babies, but I was so hyped to finally be in India! Then, the baggage carousel stopped...and my bag wasn't there. Seriously, gone. Poof. It had my entire wardrobe for a month-long trip and all my favorite chai spices. The airport staff were helpful enough, but the whole process felt so overwhelming. Anyone else had a similar experience at this airport? What's the average wait time to get your lost luggage back?

I've had it happen once, and the bag showed up three days later delivered to my hotel in Colaba. The airport's lost luggage office is tucked away near the arrivals exit, not super obvious. If you're stuck in the city for a bit, hit up Linking Road in Bandra for cheap clothes, you can get a whole outfit for under a thousand rupees and it beats waiting around. Just keep calling the airport helpline around 10am, that's when the shift change happens and you might get someone who actually checks the back room.

honestly the airport lost luggage people are hit or miss. if your bag has an airtag or something similar you might have better luck pushing them to look in specific spots, i've seen that work for friends. the tracking portal is useless so just call the airline's mumbai office directly instead, they have more pull than the airport staff. also, if you're stuck without clothes, head to hill road in bandra for cheap kurtas and leggings, way easier than trying to find western stuff in a hurry

Ugh, that totally sucks. Lost luggage is the WORST. I've never lost luggage at Mumbai airport specifically, but I have had the misfortune at other airports...let's just say it involved a lot of paperwork and several phone calls. My guess is the wait time is highly variable; it could be a couple of days, it could be a week or more, depending on how quickly they locate it and how backed up they are. Definitely keep those reference numbers they gave you and check the status online regularly. And pack a few essentials, a change of clothes, toothbrush, etc., next time you fly. You'll need 'em!

Yeah, it's a nightmare. I got the reference number, but the website is... unhelpful, to say the least. It just keeps saying "tracking your baggage". Thanks for the heads-up about the essentials; I should of thought of that. I'm stuck in @Mumbai for a few days now, so I guess I'll just have to make do. Hoping they find it soon!

I want to sell my old clothes

ngl the easiest way is to just hand them over to a scrapwala near your building, they'll sort through and take what they want, rest goes to recycling. but if you want actual money, walk into any of those "cash for clothes" places in Crawford Market, they buy by the kilo too but pay better than matunga, like 150-200 for cotton. just don't bring anything with stains or tears, they'll reject it outright and you'll waste your time hauling it there

fwiw you could also try the Instagram thrift stores that are based out of mumbai, like "bombay thrift store" or "mumbai thrift club". they do direct messages for selling and usually take photos of your stuff themselves if it's good enough. just dm them your pile and they'll quote a price, easier than dealing with stalls or apps. also, if you have any branded stuff, try the "luxury thrift" pages instead, they pay way better for zara or h&m than the general ones

The St. Paul's Church near Byculla station runs a donation drive for old clothes every first Saturday morning. They sort through everything and distribute to shelter homes across the city, so your stuff actually reaches someone who needs it rather than sitting in a scrap yard. Just drop off before 11am or the volunteers pack up for the day.
