Prakash Inn Mystery?

The place itself was alright, pretty basic but clean. What struck me was this weird recurring smell, kind of like old books and cinnamon? It was faint, but always there. Anyone else experienced that? Was it just me, or is it some local thing? I'm dying to know!

fwiw i think the replies about chai and book binders are close but missing the real source. there's a small puja supply shop tucked into the lane behind the hotel, they sell old agarbatti sticks and dried herbs wrapped in paper. that specific dusty cinnamon scent is prob from their stock of loban and dried rose petals that sit in open jute sacks. the shop's back wall shares a ventilation shaft with the hotel's ground floor, so the smell just floats up through the whole building. if you walk past it around 9am when they open up, you'll get the same hit

all the replies here are right about the chai and the binderies, but there's another layer to it. the building's got these old brass ducts from the 70s that nobody ever cleaned, they pull air from the ground floor where the hotel's kitchen stores their godown masala. that cinnamon note is definitely from their garam masala blend, they make it in-house every wednesday. if you go down to the basement parking, the smell is way stronger, almost like a spice market. next time ask for the key to the rooftop, the scent doesn't reach up there

The smell you're describing is actually a holdover from when Prakash Inn used to be a Gujarati household back in the 90s. The building was converted to a hotel about fifteen years ago, but the old wooden beams and walls in the interior corridors still hold onto that masala and paper scent from the kitchen they used to have downstairs. I've stayed there three times and noticed it too, especially near the staircase on the second floor. If it bothers you, try the rooms on the fourth floor where the ventilation is better.

I want to sell my old clothes

ngl the easiest way is to just hand them over to a scrapwala near your building, they'll sort through and take what they want, rest goes to recycling. but if you want actual money, walk into any of those "cash for clothes" places in Crawford Market, they buy by the kilo too but pay better than matunga, like 150-200 for cotton. just don't bring anything with stains or tears, they'll reject it outright and you'll waste your time hauling it there

fwiw you could also try the Instagram thrift stores that are based out of mumbai, like "bombay thrift store" or "mumbai thrift club". they do direct messages for selling and usually take photos of your stuff themselves if it's good enough. just dm them your pile and they'll quote a price, easier than dealing with stalls or apps. also, if you have any branded stuff, try the "luxury thrift" pages instead, they pay way better for zara or h&m than the general ones

The St. Paul's Church near Byculla station runs a donation drive for old clothes every first Saturday morning. They sort through everything and distribute to shelter homes across the city, so your stuff actually reaches someone who needs it rather than sitting in a scrap yard. Just drop off before 11am or the volunteers pack up for the day.
