Suman Nagar Mysteries?

A… So I'm heading to Suman Nagar next week, been hearing whispers about a really old banyan tree there, apparently, it's got some crazy history. Locals say there's a hidden shrine underneath its roots. Anyone know the story? Is it just local legend, or is there actually something there...? I'm hoping to find out. Maybe I'll even stumble upon something unexpected...

imo the banyan tree thing is overhyped but there's a reason people keep talking about it. my neighbor's dad used to run a printing press near the tree in the 70s and he said the area was totally different back then, like a small forest patch with multiple old trees not just the banyan. the shrine story might come from a small temple that got demolished during some road widening project, the idol was supposedly moved but nobody remembers where.

if you want something actually weird go to the end of ganesh marg lane around midnight. there's an abandoned house that's been locked for like 30 years and the gate has a weird symbol painted on it that nobody in the neighborhood can identify. some say it's a map, others say it's just graffiti from a local artist who died in the 90s. either way it's creepier than a tree

the sundial thing someone mentioned is real too but the dates are in a script that looks like devanagari but isn't quite, i tried looking it up once and got nowhere. the groundskeeper at the garden is a grumpy old man named prakash who will prob tell u to leave if u ask too many questions

The banyan tree story has been around for decades, but the hidden shrine part is a more recent addition. I've lived in the area for about fifteen years and remember when it was just the tree and a lot of gossip about a British officer who supposedly buried something there in the 1940s. A few years ago some college kids brought metal detectors and found nothing but old bottle caps and a rusted bicycle chain.

If you want the real local mystery, walk down to the old municipal garden on Jeevan Bima Nagar Main Road. There's a broken sundial there that nobody can explain. It's not listed in any city records and the dates carved on it don't match any known historical events in the area. The groundskeeper told me it was already there when he started working in 1991 and nobody knows where it came from.

you should check out the library near suman nagar bus stop if you want real history. it's this tiny building tucked behind a paan shop, nobody goes there except some students during exams. the librarian is this old lady who's been collecting newspaper clippings since the 70s, she has a whole folder on the banyan tree and the surrounding area. i went there once and she pulled out photos from the 60s showing the tree was way smaller back then, like half its current size, which is weird for a tree that's supposed to be centuries old.

she also mentioned something about a british surveyor who mapped the area in 1923 and noted a "significant landmark" at that spot but didnt specify what. the records got lost when the municipal office moved locations in the 80s. the library is only open till 5pm and she takes a tea break at 3:30 so plan around that.

I want to sell my old clothes

ngl the easiest way is to just hand them over to a scrapwala near your building, they'll sort through and take what they want, rest goes to recycling. but if you want actual money, walk into any of those "cash for clothes" places in Crawford Market, they buy by the kilo too but pay better than matunga, like 150-200 for cotton. just don't bring anything with stains or tears, they'll reject it outright and you'll waste your time hauling it there

fwiw you could also try the Instagram thrift stores that are based out of mumbai, like "bombay thrift store" or "mumbai thrift club". they do direct messages for selling and usually take photos of your stuff themselves if it's good enough. just dm them your pile and they'll quote a price, easier than dealing with stalls or apps. also, if you have any branded stuff, try the "luxury thrift" pages instead, they pay way better for zara or h&m than the general ones

The St. Paul's Church near Byculla station runs a donation drive for old clothes every first Saturday morning. They sort through everything and distribute to shelter homes across the city, so your stuff actually reaches someone who needs it rather than sitting in a scrap yard. Just drop off before 11am or the volunteers pack up for the day.
