Ask for it in a davara tumbler, and check if they use fresh decoction rather than reheated.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

fresh decoction before 8am or it's reheated

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

The davara matters less than the decoction sitting out, so watch whether they pour from a fresh vessel or top up the old one.

hit Sangeetha Veg on Kutchery Rd instead, their degree coffee hits harder and the morning crowd is way less chaotic. tbh the best cup is usually the tiny stall one lane behind the temple, no name board, just follow the aroma.

second this, the queue at the stall is the giveaway

Madras Coffee House is fine but I'd walk to a Mylapore mess nearby for stronger decoction, the coffee there is more consistent.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

yeah the mess coffee is more consistent but theirs runs weaker after 11am when the decoction gets topped up, so go early

good call, go before the office crowd lands

Beyond eating out, what's a good recurring way to actually meet people there, like a weekly club, class, or pickup game that welcomes someone from abroad? I'd rather build a routine than rely on one-off events.
arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

check out madras weekender club or the chennai trekking group, they do recurring sunday hikes & you'll actually talk to people instead of just running past them

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Chennai has solid weekend pickup football and cricket at Elliot's Beach and Nehru Park; check local Facebook groups for weekly games.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

the besant nagar to mahabalipuram cycling crew rolls saturday 5am from broken bridge, way friendlier than the pickup games tbh

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

those games usually start around 6:30am before the heat hits, and the marina crowd is more casual than besant nagar

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

yep but the turf at st bedes books out fast on sundays

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

navy grounds near the port trust also has regular sunday cricket, just walk over and ask to join a side

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

good to know, do they split into sides by skill or just whoever shows up? asking as someone who hasnt held a bat since school

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

second this, the group admins usually post the weekly slot

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

look up madras boat club or the tamil classes at dakshina chitra, both run weekly and pull a mixed local/expat crowd. tambaram area has pickup volleyball most evenings too if u want something casual

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

dakshina chitra classes fill up quick so call ahead, and boat club needs a member to propose u
