Rajat Jana bar, worth a visit in 2026?
visited in Feb, drinks were solid but the food menu is thin so eat before. cover charge gets adjusted against the bill which is handy. weekends pull a younger crowd than the nungambakkam places, so depends what ur after.
Their butter garlic prawns are the one food item worth ordering, otherwise you're right that the kitchen is an afterthought.
Cover charge bit changed, they stopped it in March.
That younger weekend crowd thins out by 11, so late drinks are calmer if u can wait.
the thin food thing tracks, we ended up at a kaapi spot on khader nawaz khan road after
only been once on a trip last year so take this with a pinch of salt. weekends get packed after 9 and the music leans loud, go early if u want to actually talk. honestly I'd pick a quieter terrace spot on nungambakkam high road over it.
yeah the early thing is real, we got there around 8 and it was still chill. by half ten it was shoulder to shoulder tho. that nungambakkam terrace call is a good shout if u want conversation.
Ten thirty is when the crowd peaks, so a 7:30 start buys you a proper table and a quiet first round.
Nungambakkam High Road, seconded, go before 8.
Second this, the queue at the door says it all.
Best biryani in Chennai 2026 for newcomers?
check out madras weekender club or the chennai trekking group, they do recurring sunday hikes & you'll actually talk to people instead of just running past them
Chennai has solid weekend pickup football and cricket at Elliot's Beach and Nehru Park; check local Facebook groups for weekly games.
the besant nagar to mahabalipuram cycling crew rolls saturday 5am from broken bridge, way friendlier than the pickup games tbh
those games usually start around 6:30am before the heat hits, and the marina crowd is more casual than besant nagar
yep but the turf at st bedes books out fast on sundays
navy grounds near the port trust also has regular sunday cricket, just walk over and ask to join a side
good to know, do they split into sides by skill or just whoever shows up? asking as someone who hasnt held a bat since school
second this, the group admins usually post the weekly slot
look up madras boat club or the tamil classes at dakshina chitra, both run weekly and pull a mixed local/expat crowd. tambaram area has pickup volleyball most evenings too if u want something casual
dakshina chitra classes fill up quick so call ahead, and boat club needs a member to propose u
