Is 180 rupees normal for coffee at Madras Coffee House 2026?
180 is steep for a station counter, but Madras Coffee House isn't really a cheap stall, it's a proper chain outlet inside Central. i paid around 90 to 110 for filter coffee at similar spots last year, snack included maybe 140 to 160. you're likely paying a small captive-audience markup. if you want the real thing, walk out to the Broadway side and grab coffee from a smaller shop for half that
Captive audience markup sounds about right, station rents are brutal
Platform 1 side has cheaper stalls, morning trains.
those stalls thin out after 11am though, so the cheap window is really just the morning rush
True, the chain outlets inside the station concourse carry that premium. Small correction on the Broadway walk: that side's closer to Parry's Corner, and the tiny filter coffee shops there run 25 to 40 rupees a tumbler. Worth the five minute detour if you have time before your train.
fair but the detour only pays off if u skip the coffee at the counter entirely, otherwise the tumbler price is kinda moot
whats the snack though, that changes the math
Yep, the 140 to 160 ballpark tracks, though the snack matters more than the coffee since a decent veg puff or murukku set can swing it another 40 odd.
The real filter coffee is on Wall Tax Road.
Avoid the concourse altogether and hit the shops off NSC Bose Road, where a tumbler still runs under 50.
Shaib Catring Chennai cafe worth a detour 2026?
Worth a detour if you're already in the area, but the real draw is their mutton kola urundai, not the biryani everyone raves about.
Fair point on the kola urundai, though I'd argue the prawn biryani on Fridays is the sleeper hit.
Agreed on the kola urundai, but go before noon if you want it, they run out well ahead of the biryani.
Shaib Catring is in a lane off Peters Road, so tell the driver that rather than the main road.
Good call on the lane, though the entrance is easy to miss behind the tea stall, so watch for the signboard.
Auto from Egmore, meter plus traffic.
Cheaper via 17M bus, but slower.
yeah meter plus the slow crawl down Pantheon Road
meter's fine but the driver will try a flat 250 if he clocks ur accent. ask for the meter or just walk to the stand on Gandhi Irwin Rd and pick one already headed south, less haggling that way
