Central Biriyani Chennai worth the trip in 2026?
went last year & the mutton biriyani at their triplicane spot was solid but the queue at peak lunch is no joke, go before noon
yeah the pre noon thing is real, we queued about 40 mins around 1pm and half the crowd was already grumbling. if u can swing a weekday morning it's a different experience entirely. mutton sells out first so don't roll in late expecting it
weekday 11am still gets a line, just a short one
the 40 min wait tracks but the chicken there is a step down so if goat's gone just walk, plenty of spots off Burkit Road do a decent plate
Mutton's gone by 12:30 most days.
Triplicane runs out by 12:30, so before noon is cutting it close.
Only caveat is the chicken is a step down from the goat, so order accordingly if u go.
solid call on the timing. their spot near the high court gets packed with office crowd right after 12 so the pre noon window is tight, like 11:30 not 11:59. goat's the move, chicken's fine but not why u go
I've only eaten there once, on a trip a couple of years back, so take this with a pinch of salt. It's good but I wouldn't build a whole evening around it. Since you're in T Nagar, the biriyani places around there will do you fine for a no-fuss meal. Central is more of a name than a revelation, honestly.
Fair take but "name over revelation" undersells it a bit, the dum cooking is genuinely different from most spots. Just don't treat it like a pilgrimage, grab it if you're nearby and skip the detour otherwise.
Hotel rates in Chennai 2026 for foreigners?
stayed near there in 2024, the lodges around Modern Central do unofficially quote foreigners a bit higher, maybe 800 to 1200 rupees for a basic non AC room vs 500 to 700 for locals. fwiw the rates are usually negotiable if u pay cash upfront and skip the ones right on the main road.
Carry small notes, they rarely have change for a 2000.
Rates have climbed since 2024, so budget closer to 1000 to 1500 for non AC now, and ask about the check out time before paying.
Checkout is 24hrs from check in, not noon.
The main road part matters because those places also add a small commission if you book through any agent.
those lodges usually ask for passport copies upfront too so keep one handy & avoid anything quoting per night instead of per day
Negotiating works better midweek than weekends, when lodges near the Egmore station side fill up with domestic travellers.
cash upfront thing tracks tbh. just double check the room before paying, some of the cheap ones get pretty rough
agreed, though midweek helps too
didnt know about the foreigner markup, good to know
