Is the Madras Coffee House inside the station worth a stop for proper filter coffee, or should I walk somewhere nearby instead? Any idea what a cup runs these days and how early they open?

the station one is fine but overpriced, like 40 50 bucks now. walk 5 min to mohan's on evr periyar salai for a proper davara tumbler at half that, opens around 6am

Mohan's tumbler is solid but check the counter hours, they shutter mid-morning before the lunch rush.

Fair warning, EVR Periyar Salai is wide and the footover bridge drops you on the wrong side, so budget an extra five minutes to cross.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

that side has no signal, screenshot ur directions first

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah 40 50 sounds about right now, and their davara is smaller than it used to be

Agree on the tumbler but their exact change situation can be annoying if you're carrying a big note.

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

yep, carry a 20 or 50 or they'll hand u a fistful of coins

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Ask for the davara set, not just a cup.

Honestly if you've got a couple hours, hop on the MRTS one stop to Park Town and grab coffee at Rayar's Mess on Arundale St. Its proper strong filter kaapi, dirt cheap, though it gets packed after 7. The station one is fine if you're short on time but Rayar's is worth the walk imo.

second this, but go before 7 or you're standing

Madras Coffee House at Central Station, worth a stop?

landing at Chennai Central around 7am next month and wondering if the Madras Coffee House inside the station is actually decent or just a tourist trap. is the filter coffee there worth it before I hea… landing at Chennai Central around 7am next month and wondering if the Madras Coffee House inside the station is actually decent or just a tourist trap. is the filter coffee there worth it before I head into the city in 2026, or should I wait and find somewhere better nearby?
arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Honestly the coffee there is fine but overpriced; walk 5 min to Triplicane for better filter coffee at half the price.

arrow_drop_up 11 arrow_drop_down

Agreed, though the walk is closer to 15 min if you're hauling luggage, so grab the station one first.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

True, and the subway from the Central platforms drops you closer to EVR Periyar Salai side so you skip a chunk of that haul.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah the coffee's fine but you're paying for the location. If you're heading toward Egmore anyway there's a tiny Udupi spot on Poonamallee High Road that does a solid degree coffee for like 20 rupees.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

the spot right by the station on Wall Tax Road does a decent filter coffee too if u dont wanna wander far with bags

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Just mind the 7am rush, gets packed

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Filter coffee at Hotel Ramakrishna, opposite the station.
