Where to meet people in Chennai 2026

Any recurring stuff where a newcomer can actually meet people, like a weekly club or regular meetup rather than one-off events? Also is Central Biriyani the kind of spot where you can just sit and chat or is it more grab and go?

check the chennai reddit meetups, they do monthly things & nobody cares if ur new

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah r/chennai pinned thread has the dates

Reddit meetups are a solid shout, though they've been leaning toward the bigger monthly bar nights lately. There are smaller spin-off groups on the same sub that do coffee mornings in Kilpauk, easier to actually talk to people there.

On Central Biriyani, it's more sit-down than grab and go, the kind of place where you linger over a plate of mutton biriyani and nobody rushes you. For recurring meetups, look at the Chennai Trekking Club weekend walks and the board game nights at cafes around Besant Nagar, both draw regulars. Chennai runs on routine, so showing up same time each week beats any one-off event.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Fair point on the routine thing. I'd add the Sunday morning runs that start near the beach, those regulars are pretty welcoming to newcomers. What's the crowd like at the board game nights, mostly students or mixed?

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

idk about the crowd but a friend said it skews mixed, twentysomethings mostly

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

the routine point is real, i'd add the marina walking groups that form around 5.30am near the lighthouse, mostly regulars who notice a new face. chennai trekking club also has weekday evening cycling if weekends are packed for u

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Ngl the sit-down thing matters, but a solo newcomer at a biriyani table still needs an intro, so ask around about the Adyar/Thiruvanmiyur terrace board game crews too.

Mylapore evening walkers, 6pm daily.

Check whether the lodge is the one off Poonamallee High Road near the Koyambedu side or closer to Purasaiwalkam, because the two are very different for walking. The Purasaiwalkam end puts you near a decent row of Chettinad places around Kellys, while the other end is mostly highway and you'd be autoing for everything. Ask them directly which one before you book.

arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

stayed nearby last year, that stretch is fine for food, there's a cluster of messes and tea stalls within a 5 min walk. transport is the weak bit, you'll want autos for anything past the station. rooms i can't vouch for in 2026

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

yeah the food bit is right but transport isnt that bad, the MRTS station is prob a 10 min walk if u dont mind the heat

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

fair on the food but the walk to the station gets rough in peak heat, buses on the main road are prob the easier bet

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

rooms ok in 2026, ask for the ones away from the road

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

bus 21G on the main road is teh easier bet

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Auto stand by the lodge gate beats flagging one on the road.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Second this, the shade disappears after 10am though

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

The messes thin out past 9pm though, so eat early or walk toward the bigger hotels for a late dinner.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Chennai Egmore, 15 min walk north.
