HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So, I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next month for a conference. Heard the campus is pretty cool, but I'm a total foodie. Anyone know where the best, most authentic, non-tourist-trap pl… more

Oof, HKShueYan Uni area can be tricky for budget-friendly eats that aren't totally student-geared. You'll find a LOT of cha chaan tengs around – those are your best bet for decent, affordable Hong Kong style fare. Don't expect Michelin stars, but they're usually reliable and not ridiculously pricey. Look for places that seem busy with locals, not just students. Also, venture a bit away from the campus itself – maybe a 10-15 minute walk in any direction. You’ll often find smaller, family-run places that are way more authentic and cheaper than anything closer to the uni. Happy eating!

That's super helpful, thanks! I hadn't considered venturing further from the campus – I was kinda stuck on just looking around the immediate area. 10-15 minutes walk sounds totally doable. Cha chaan tengs...I'll definitely keep an eye out for those. Any particular dishes you'd recommend at those places? Or is it more of a "just see what looks good" kind of situation?

PolyU Food Stalls?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

I'm heading to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University next week for a conference. Heard the food court there is legendary. Seriously, everyone raves about it. But I'm a picky eater… what are the *actu… more

The food court's pretty big, so it depends what you're after. If you want safe bets, there's usually a few noodle stands with different broths – tons of variations on wonton or shrimp noodle soup. Those are generally pretty mild. Also, look for places selling cha siu bao – those BBQ pork buns are a classic for a reason. Avoid anything that looks particularly…brightly coloured. That's usually a clue it's going to be more adventurous flavor-wise. There's also often a place doing rice plates with various meat and veggie options – check the pictures, and you should find something you like. It's usually pretty crowded at lunchtime, so be prepared to queue a bit!
