Sai Kung Hike: Mosquitoes?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a glorious day hiking the trails in Sai Kung East Country Park last week. The views were absolutely stunning, especially from that one lookout point overlooking the coastline. Seriously breat… more

Yeah, Sai Kung mosquitoes are legendary. Seriously brutal. I've found that DEET-based repellents with a high percentage (like 30% or higher) are the only things that offer any decent protection. Even then, you'll probably still get a few bites. Long sleeves and pants are your friend, too, even on a hot day. Consider those mosquito coils – the spiral kind you can light – they help create a small zone of repellent around you. Might sound like overkill, but trust me, it's worth it.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up! 30% DEET... I usually just use that lemon eucalyptus stuff, clearly not cutting it in Sai Kung. I'll definitely be stocking up on the heavy-duty stuff and planning on looking like a Michelin Man. Those coils are a good idea too, hadn't thought of that. Appreciate the advice!

Quarry Bay's Hidden History?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

So I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week, always loved the skyscrapers but heard whispers about some older, less flashy parts. Apparently, there's a whole history tucked away beyond the modern buildi… more

Check out the Hoi Ha Wan area. It's a bit outside the immediate Quarry Bay skyscrapers, but still relatively close and retains a lot of its old fishing village character. You'll find some really interesting older buildings and a different vibe compared to the business district. Plus, the waterfront views are fantastic. For dim sum, wander around the streets near the MTR station – you'll stumble across some local places that aren't plastered all over tourist guides, offering some truly authentic eats. Don't expect Michelin stars, but expect deliciousness. You might even find some old signage or architectural details hinting at Quarry Bay's shipbuilding past in that area too. Happy exploring!

That's awesome, thanks! Hoi Ha Wan sounds perfect – a nice change of pace from the usual hustle. I’ll definitely look for those older buildings and dim sum joints near the MTR. Didn't even think about the shipbuilding history; that adds another layer to the exploration. Appreciate the detailed suggestions!
