Hi guys,

I am a Berlin bedroom DJ with an upcoming official gig. So I want to do things right with taxes and GEMA. It will be a side gig (definitely less than 20k € a year), so I think Kleingewerbe is enough.

I am mostly looking for someone who went through the process already and can point me in the right direction. From a first research I know I have to do

- Kleingewerbeanmeldung

- Anmeldung at Ordnungsamt?

- Anmeldung at Finanzamt?

- Anmeldung at GEMA

Obviously then there is also writing offers, invoices and doing taxes. So if anybody feels like guiding me a little bit, as entrepreneurship in germany is always a hassle, I'd appreciate it! Have a nice day everyone :)

(I am native german btw, just writing in english as this seems to be the norm here)

honestly the berlin service portal is your best friend for this, you can do the gewerbeanmeldung online in about 15 minutes and it costs like 15-35 euros depending on your bezirk. the finanzamt will send you a fragebogen zur steuerlichen erfassung automatically after that, just fill it out and send it back within a month or they'll get grumpy

for gema, depends on the venue - some clubs in berlin already have a blanket license that covers DJs, but if you're playing at a smaller spot like a bar in neukölln they might ask you to register separately. the gema tariff for live DJ sets is honestly not that bad, like 50-100 euros per event for small venues

one thing nobody mentions is that you should open a separate bank account for this, even just a free n26 or something. makes tax season way less painful when your DJ income isn't mixed with your regular spending. also grab a cheap accounting app like lexoffice or sevdesk, they handle the eÜR format automatically which saves headaches

yeah you're on the right track. the kleingewerbeanmeldung is step one, you do that at the ordnungsamt or online via the berlin service portal. that form also counts as your finanzamt anmeldung since they share the data automatically, so no separate trip needed.

for gema you actually don't need to register as a DJ unless you're playing other people's music in a public space or streaming it. if it's just your own tracks or a live set at a club that already has a gema license, you're usually covered. worth double checking with the venue though.

invoices are easy once you have your steuernummer. just include your name, address, date, description of service, amount, and a line saying "umsatzsteuerbefreit nach §19 UStG" since you're under the 22k threshold. keep all receipts and do a simple eÜR once a year, elster makes it pretty painless.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
