Are there any places in Berlin where you can be completely alone and chill?
Is there any cheap or even free places you could go to in or outside of the town to just... be alone for a bit? Obviously outside isn't great because of winter.
I live in a WG myself and can't really offer him my room either. I suggested the Ringbahn or the Ubahn, but obviously there's strikes atm and apparently the Ubahn shuts down during the night anyways, so he can't stay there.
honestly the Staatsbibliothek is a solid choice but another option is the aquarium at the Zoologischer Garten. it's not free but it's like 12 euros and during weekdays it's basically empty. he can just sit in the dark with the fish tanks and no one will bother him for hours. the blue light and quiet hum is pretty calming too.
if he wants totally free and doesn't mind a bit of a walk, the Friedhof der Märzgefallenen in Friedrichshain is a big quiet cemetery. it's open during daylight and most people just walk through without stopping. he can find a bench in a far corner and just sit. cemeteries in Berlin are treated more like parks so it's not weird to hang out there. just bundle up warm.

solid breakdown, i'd add that the Schöneberg mention is spot-on but the guide leaves out how good the U1 line is for getting around. from Nollendorfplatz you're at Warschauer Strasse in like 10 minutes and Kottbusser Tor in maybe 6, so you can hit both Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain without a transfer. my partner and i stayed near Akazienstrasse last year and paid 95 a night for a quiet room with a balcony, way better value than anything in Mitte. the Akazienstrasse itself has a couple of great italian delis and a small cinema that shows english-language films, worth a lazy afternoon
