Are German's Accustomed to Black Ice or Is It Just Me?

It's not just you, the first real freeze always catches people off guard. The locals you see power walking probably just have better winter boots with proper tread, or they've got those little spiked slip-ons from the drugstore. I've seen people wipe out on the U-Bahn steps at Alexanderplatz even in February, so nobody is immune. If you want to feel safer, check out a shop like Globetrotter or even Decathlon for boots with a deep rubber sole, it makes a noticeable difference on those glassy patches.

honestly they're just used to it, but a lot of them are also wearing those weird slip-on crampons from DM or Rossmann. they're like 5 euro and go over any shoe, look a bit silly but you won't fall on your ass. i keep a pair in my bag all winter now

You are probably overcorrecting. Locals are not immune to black ice, they just know which paths stay gritted. The main sidewalks on Karl-Marx-Allee and parts of Friedrichshain get salted early, but side streets in Neukolln or Wedding stay treacherous for days. Stick to main roads if you can, and if you see a Berliner in Birkenstocks gliding past, they are either insane or they live three meters from a Spati.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
