That got me thinking - is Berlin number one in the world when it comes to buying and using second hand clothes? Has anyone visited a place where this type of fashion is even more popular?

tbh i think tokyo gives it a run for its money especially in harajuku where thrifting is like a whole subculture thing. but berlin's unique because the second hand thing isn't just a fashion statement, it's tied to the whole flohmarkt culture that's been around since the wall fell. go to mauerpark on a sunday, you'll see families selling old clothes next to vintage dealers next to punks trading patches. that mix doesn't happen in many places

I'd say Berlin has the edge because second hand here isn't just a fashion choice, it's baked into the city's economics. You can walk into any Spati and find someone selling vintage band tees next to the beer cooler. The flea markets at Arkonaplatz and Nowkoelln Flowmarkt have a different vibe than the big tourist ones, more locals trading clothes they actually wore. I've lived in London and visited Tokyo, and neither has that same casual integration where buying used is just what you do rather than a curated aesthetic.

I've lived in Berlin for years and I'd say it's definitely up there, but calling it the capital might be a stretch. What makes Berlin special is how integrated secondhand is into daily life, not just a niche thing. You can walk into a Humana on Frankfurter Allee and find designer mixed with basics, and nobody looks at you twice for wearing something clearly from the 90s. In places like London or Paris, thrifting feels more like a curated aesthetic, while here it's genuinely just normal.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
