Does Berlin ever feel like a small place or community? Such as often bumping into people you know, some of those you met for the first time already knowing your friends, or recognizing people off dati… Does Berlin ever feel like a small place or community? Such as often bumping into people you know, some of those you met for the first time already knowing your friends, or recognizing people off dating apps in public ?

I'm moving from LA and at times there were moments I felt the world was small when meeting people.

Curious to know if it's the same in Berlin ?

The small world thing hits hardest when you change neighborhoods. I lived in Friedrichshain for two years and felt like I couldn't go to Boxhagener Platz without seeing someone I knew. Then I moved to Wedding and suddenly I was a ghost for six months, nobody recognized me anywhere. The moment you cross the Ringbahn your whole social map resets, which is either freeing or lonely depending on your mood.

moving from LA you're gonna find it's a different kind of small. in LA you bump into people because everyone drives the same three highways and goes to the same few spots in silver lake or echo park. here it's more about your kiez, you'll see the same faces at your local bakerie, your späti, and the same park bench every sunday. but step one u-bahn stop over and you might as well be in a different city, i've gone months without seeing someone i know from neukölln after i moved to wedding

yeah it definitely happens, especially if you're in a specific kiez for a while. i used to run into the same people from my gym at the späti on weserstrasse all the time, and then see them at syndikat on a friday night. the dating app thing is real too, i matched with someone on tinder, saw them on hinge the next day, and then literally passed them on their balcony while walking my dog the week after. it's not as small as a village but your circles collapse fast if you stay in one neighborhood
