Spent hours wandering through the exhibits on Berlin's history, fascinating stuff! But I noticed something odd, a small, almost hidden room off the main hall, with a locked door and no information placard. Anyone know what's in there? Is it some kind of secret archive or just a storage room? Seriously curious... It was bugging me all day.

The room you're talking about isn't mentioned in any of the museum maps, but I've heard from a friend who used to work there that it's actually a small restoration workshop. They keep it locked because they sometimes have sensitive pieces laid out for conservation work. If you ever want to peek inside, try going on a weekday morning, sometimes the door is propped open then. The museum's own website has a contact form where you could ask about guided behind-the-scenes tours, they do offer them occasionally for groups.

I've actually asked a staff member about that room before. It's the old museum director's office from the 1900s, completely preserved but not open to the public. They use it for storing fragile documents that need specific climate control. If you go back, the cafe around the corner on Wallstraße does a decent Berliner Pfannkuchen, worth a stop after all that wandering.

Probably just storage. Museums are massive operations, and they usually have areas for things not on display, cleaning supplies, extra artifacts, maybe even a staff break room. Unless it's clearly marked "STAFF ONLY" or something, it's probably nothing too exciting, sadly. But hey, a mystery adds to the charm, I guess!

Yeah, you're probably right. I figured it was something like that, but a tiny part of me hoped for, like, a secret exhibit or something. A hidden collection of, I don't know, 18th-century Prussian sock puppets or something equally bizarre. Oh well! Still a cool museum though.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
