Lost in Translation?

The place itself is gorgeous, all ornate wood and quiet corners. But the menu was entirely in Russian, and even with Google Translate, I struggled to figure out what half the things were. I ended up ordering something that tasted vaguely of beets and potatoes, which... wasn't exactly what I was craving. Anyone else had a similar experience trying to decipher the menu? Did I miss some secret underground cafe menu or something?

Oh man, the Russisches Haus! I totally get you. That place is stunning, but yeah, the menu's a bit of a mystery, isn't it? I've been there a few times and always end up pointing at pictures or just ordering whatever sounds vaguely edible. Once I got something that looked like borscht, but it was actually some kind of cold beet soup. It was... an experience. I wouldn't say there's a secret menu, just... a language barrier. Maybe next time try going during a less busy time; you might get some more help from staff if they're not rushed off their feet. Good luck deciphering the culinary code next time!

Haha, yeah, the cold beet soup sounds...adventurous. I think I'll stick to pointing at pictures next time too. Less busy time is a good tip, thanks! I figured it wasn't a secret menu, more like a translation fail. It was a beautiful place though, so worth the slightly confusing meal. Maybe I should've downloaded a translator app beforehand...live and learn!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
