MIM's Hidden History?

Saw instruments from all over the world, some seriously ancient stuff. But what I really wanted to know... is there any documentation about the museum's own history? Like, who donated the initial collections? What were the early displays like? I couldn't find much info online about that part of its story. It's a great museum showing centuries of music, but the museum's own story feels a little lost to time...

That's a fascinating question! The MIM's own history is definitely less well-documented than the instruments themselves. I'd suggest trying the museum's archives directly, many museums have surprisingly detailed records, even if they aren't easily accessible online. You might even find old photographs or brochures showcasing early exhibitions. Alternatively, looking into Berlin's city archives (Stadtarchiv) could yield some results; they often hold records related to major cultural institutions. It's a bit of a detective hunt, but uncovering that hidden history would make for a pretty awesome follow-up blog post or something!

Wow, that's a great suggestion! I hadn't thought about checking the museum's own archives, that's a total goldmine waiting to be explored. And the @Berlin city archives... smart thinking! I'm definitely up for a bit of a detective hunt; it'll be like solving a musical mystery. A blog post is a fantastic idea, I could totally see that happening. Thanks for the amazing tips!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
