Old National Gallery's Secret?

Spent hours wandering, completely mesmerized by the sculptures. But I noticed something odd... almost all the informational plaques were in German. I could decipher a few words here and there, but it really hampered my appreciation of the pieces. I tried using the museum app, but it kept freezing. Is there a hidden audio guide or something that I missed, or is this a common problem? Maybe some secret society only understands the true meaning of the plaques... just kidding (mostly).

honestly the german-only plaques are a real pain, but the secret move is to skip the plaques entirely and rent the actual audio guide at the desk near the entrance, it's not hidden at all. it costs like 3 euros and covers way more than the app, plus it doesn't freeze. if you're into the sculptures, ask for the one with the "Caspar David Friedrich" focus, it's the best version they have. also the museum's own website has a downloadable pdf in english, but you'd have to have known that before going. next time, grab a coffee at the cafe upstairs first, the view over the park is worth the break.

It's a known quirk, and you're definitely not the first to hit that wall. If you're still in Berlin, swing by the ticket desk and ask for the "English highlights leaflet," it's not the big guidebook, it's a folded paper thing they keep under the counter. Also, the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche is a five minute walk and shares your ticket, the sculpture collection there is smaller but the labels are in both languages, so it's a good way to fill in the gaps without any tech.

Try the little yellow card by the ticket machines near the entrance, it's not a map but a self-guided walk through the sculpture hall in English, printed on card stock and free. It points out details like the hidden signatures on the plinths and which pieces were restored after the war, stuff the German plaques skip entirely. For the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche tip people mentioned, it's worth combining both in one afternoon since they share a ticket, but go there first because it closes at 6 while the main gallery stays open later on Thursdays. And if the app freezes again, just screenshot the card's route before you start, low tech beats glitchy software every time.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
