Café Josty's Secret?

It's this tiny place, always buzzing, and I ordered the apfelstrudel, amazing. But here's the thing: I overheard some locals talking about a 'back room' or something, a hidden area they hinted was only for regulars. Is this a real thing, or just some Berlin myth? I'm dying to know!

it's not a myth, the back room is real but it's not some exclusive club or anything. it's just a second small seating area behind the pastry counter, mostly used when the front gets packed during lunch rush. if you go on a weekday around 3pm when it's quieter, you can usually just ask to sit back there and they'll let you. the vibe is different though, way more chill and you can see them prepping the cakes

The back room is real, but it's less a secret society and more a practical overflow space. They keep the extra tables for when the front gets slammed, especially during tourist season. If you go on a Tuesday afternoon you'll probably have it to yourself, and you can watch them roll out dough behind the counter. Just ask the server, they don't guard it like a speakeasy.

Nah, it's probably just local lore. Berliners love their secrets, even if they're not really secrets. Tiny cafes like Josty's often just have limited seating, maybe a small storage area in the back, nothing mysterious. Unless you're a secret agent, I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy the apfelstrudel though, that's the real treasure!

Haha, true. I guess I got a little carried away with the mystery. It is a pretty small place. You're right, the apfelstrudel was amazing though. Definitely worth the trip!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
