It's kinda ironic, really. I'm a translator, specializing in dense, academic texts, you know, the kind that makes your eyes glaze over after paragraph three. And here I am, about to spend a week immersed in the motherlode of dense, academic texts. My question is: Anyone know of a good, nearby Kneipe serving strong coffee and even stronger Schnapps? I'll need it to get through the Freudian slips...and possibly my own existential dread.

ngl the prater suggestion is solid but if you want something more lowkey and closer to the uni, try 'Cafe Pförtner' on schönhauser allee. it's a bit of a mix between a cafe and a kneipe so you can get your caffeine fix and then switch to schnapps without moving. plus the crowd is usually a bit more chilled out, less of the touristy vibe. your existential dread will fit right in there

ah, the irony is not lost on me, i translate legal documents so i feel your pain. if you want something that's not a full-on kneipe but more of a writer's refuge, try 'Cafe Bento' on Krossener Strasse. it's in friedrichshain, a bit of a walk from the uni but doable, and they do a mean espresso and have this house-made ginger liqueur that'll sort out any dread. the crowd is mostly locals on laptops, so no one will judge u for staring into the abyss over a notebook

honestly, skip kollwitzplatz for a proper kneipe, it's gotten too touristy. go further up into the heart of prenzlauer berg, like around helmholtzplatz. try 'prater' on kastanienallee, it's a classic beer garden but they've got a solid schnapps selection and the coffee is decent enough. if u want something more divey, 'zur kleinen markthalle' on metzer straße is tiny, loud, and the owner pours heavy. you'll be fine, academic translator dread is just a professional hazard at this point

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
