The atmosphere was buzzing, so much energy. I saw this tiny, unassuming bakery, no name, just a little bell above the door, tucked away between a vintage clothing store and a kebab stand. The smell...oh man, the smell was incredible, something yeasty and slightly sweet, unlike anything I'd ever encountered. I popped in and the old woman behind the counter just smiled, handed me a warm pastry, and wouldn't take any money! It was amazing, but what was it? I've been trying to recreate the taste ever since, no luck. Anyone know what kind of pastry that might have been? That bakery, it felt like a secret, hidden in plain sight.

That's a seriously cool story! Sounds like a truly magical Berlin experience. It's tough to say for sure what kind of pastry it was without more clues, but that yeasty, sweet smell... maybe something like a Hefeteiggebäck? Possibly a variation on a Stuten, but much smaller and possibly with some kind of unusual spice or fruit filling? It could also have been a completely unique recipe, something only that Oma makes. Berlin has some seriously amazing hidden bakeries, some truly legendary stuff happens in those tiny places. You should just go back and see if it's there again. If not, maybe just accept it as a wonderful, unexplained Berlin moment. You'll always have that memory.

Yeah, a Hefeteiggebäck sounds about right! It wasn't quite a Stuten though, those are usually pretty big. This was tiny, like...a bite-sized mystery. The spice thing is interesting, I didn't really get a specific spice, more of a general warm, almost cinnamon-y feeling but not exactly cinnamon. And you're totally right, it could have been something completely unique. The whole thing felt so fleeting, like a Berlin fairy tale. Going back is tempting, but I kinda like the mystery. It's a great story, even if I never solve it. Thanks!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
