I'm a photographer, and I'm really interested in urban decay and street art. My question is: How much of the site is actually accessible to the public? I've seen some pics, but they're pretty mixed on what's open to explore. Is it a case of 'enter at your own risk', or are there designated areas? Also, any tips on the best time to go for good light and less crowds? Getting some killer shots would be awesome...

Honestly, the accessibility of ICE Werk Rummelsburg is a bit of a grey area. Some parts are definitely open, others... less so. Think "enter at your own risk" but with a hefty dose of "use your best judgement." Security presence varies, and it's not consistently patrolled.

Golden hour (sunrise/sunset) is your friend for the photography aspect, fewer people, amazing light. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends, obviously. But even then, it's Berlin; you'll probably encounter someone.

Check recent photos on Instagram or Flickr using relevant hashtags. That'll give you a much better, up-to-the-minute sense of what's currently accessible and what the vibe is like. That's way more reliable than some random comment from a Redditor three years ago. Be aware of your surroundings and don't be a jerk, respect the space and any potential residents (yes, even in abandoned buildings).

Yeah, that makes total sense. "Enter at your own risk" perfectly sums it up! I figured it wasn't exactly a well-maintained tourist spot. Thanks for the Instagram/Flickr tip, that's way smarter than relying on outdated info. Golden hour sounds ideal, I'll definitely plan for that. And yeah, respecting the space is a must; wouldn't want to be that guy.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
