Like, actual, clandestine, maybe-involving-rituals kind of societies. Is this just student folklore, or is there some seriously hidden underground stuff going on at that place? My roommate swears they saw some dudes in robes carrying a giant owl statue one night. Seriously. I need to know the truth before I accidentally stumble into some initiation ceremony I'm not prepared for.

You'll probably hear about the "Club der toten Dichter" at some point, but that's just a running joke among the literature students. There's a weekly open mic night at a pub on Leibnizstraße that they run, and the name is pure irony. What's actually worth knowing is the Tuesday night jazz sessions at the A-Trane on Bleibtreustraße. That's where half the music department ends up after hours, and it's a better way to meet people than chasing rumors about owl statues.

The owl statue thing sounds like it could be a reference to the "Eulenspiegel" performance group that sometimes meets near the back courtyard off Bundesallee. They're not a secret society, just a bunch of theater students who do late-night experimental stuff and take themselves way too seriously. If you want actual weird subcultures at UdK, check out the Friday afternoon screenings at the Filmuniversität next door. That's where you'll find the real oddballs, and they're about as clandestine as a flyer taped to a lamp post.

ngl the owl statue thing is just the eulenspiegel crew being extra, they do that sometimes before their shows. but there's a group called the "Mittwochsgesellschaft" that meets at a bar near Savignyplatz, mostly older alumni and a few current students. they don't do robes but they have this weird handshake thing and they're super picky about who they invite. if you really wanna find them, hang around the second floor of the udk library on tuesdays around 6, that's where they scout people

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
