Lost in Translation

Such a peaceful place, almost felt like stepping back in time. I'm curious though, are there any lesser-known stories or legends associated with the church? Something beyond the official historical accounts, you know? Maybe something whispered amongst locals over the years... I'd love to hear it.

There is a story, though it's less a legend and more a quiet piece of local knowledge. During the war, the church's original stained glass was removed and hidden in a nearby farmhouse to protect it from bombing. The farmer's wife supposedly kept them wrapped in old wool blankets in her root cellar, and after the war, she refused to let the church have them back until the pastor personally thanked her. He never did, and she died with them still under her floorboards. The glass you saw is actually a 1950s replacement, and the originals were only rediscovered in the 1990s during a renovation. They're now in a small archive in Potsdam, not on display.

honestly i've heard some weird stuff about the organ there. not like ghost stories but more that the original one had some kind of feud with the local priest back in the 1800s. something about him wanting it moved and the builder refusing. ended up with the priest getting transferred out of potsdam entirely. total small town drama but the old timers at the cafe on friedrich-ebert-straße still bring it up sometimes if you ask the right way

yeah the whole spot has some weird energy if you know where to look. there's a story that during the gdr years, the stasi used the church tower as an observation post because you can see straight down the havel to the glienicke bridge. locals say they found a small hidden room up there in the 90s with nothing but a chair and a pair of binoculars bolted to the floor. no one talks about it officially but the old pförtner at the schloss will sometimes mention it if you catch him after his second coffee

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
