I noticed something weird. Every single bowl had a tiny, almost invisible, origami crane tucked under the lid. Nobody else seemed to notice, or at least they weren't mentioning it. Was it a lucky charm thing? A local tradition? Or am I losing my mind?? Anyone else seen this at Shisomen?

Marco's cranes have been a thing since the Kantstrasse days, but what nobody brings up is that you can actually ask for one. I did it once, half joking, and the server came back with a red crane on a little dish. She said he keeps a stash in a tin behind the counter for people who are curious rather than just confused. So if you want one without playing the guessing game, just ask, worst case you get a shrug.

nobody ever mentions the napkins. marco folds the cranes from the same red paper packs but he also does the little foil swans on the chopstick rests, and those only show up when you order the karaage. asked him about it once on a quiet monday and he just said "swans are for people who get it" and walked off. so the crane might be less mystical than everyone's making it out to be, hes clearly just messing around with paper when hes bored.

ok so the crane thing is old news to anyone who's been going since the Kantstrasse days. what nobody's mentioned is the timing. Marco only folds them on nights when the fish delivery comes in late, its like a little signal to the regulars that the broth got rushed. if you get a crane on a tuesday, order the shio not the tonkotsu. trust me on that one.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
