I found this amazing little bookstore tucked away, almost hidden, selling these incredible, antique maps of Berlin. The owner, a wizened old woman with eyes that twinkled like the Spree River at sunset, barely spoke English, but her passion for cartography was infectious. My question is: Are there any other similarly hidden gems along Schöneberger Straße that aren't listed in the usual tourist guides? I only scratched the surface, and I feel I missed something incredible

yeah that bookstore sounds like a gem, i swear half the charm of that street is just letting yourself get distracted by random doorways. if you head a bit further south towards winterfeldtplatz there's a tiny basement shop that sells vintage vinyl and old postkarten, the guy who runs it is always playing something weird from the 70s. also if you see a faded red sign for "cafe böse" it's not a cafe at all, they sell handmade leather journals and notebooks that smell incredible. honestly the best stuff on schöneberger strasse is the stuff that looks like it shouldn't be open anymore

honestly the best thing on that street is the secondhand lamp shop between the nail salon and the döner place, no sign just a window full of dusty lamps from the 60s and 70s. the old guy who runs it will let you plug them in and test them, he's got this whole system of colored extension cords running across the ceiling. also if you go into the courtyard at number 23 there's a woman who restores old berlin street signs, she's got a stack of them leaning against the wall and will sell you one for like 15 euro if you ask nicely. the trick is to just walk slowly and look for doors that are slightly ajar, that's where the real stuff happens

You've already gotten good tips about the courtyards, but don't miss the little passageway right at number 31. It looks like a dead end for deliveries, but there's a tiny framing shop in the back that also sells antique prints of Berlin neighborhoods. The woman who runs it has a collection of old postcards from the 1920s that she keeps in a wooden box under the counter, just ask to see them. She charges about 3 to 5 euro each and they make better souvenirs than anything you'll find at the tourist shops near Checkpoint Charlie.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
