If you're stuck in that situation again, look for the yellow "Kassenbon" button before you start scanning, it sometimes resets the machine's attitude.

For a less stressful experience, head to the Edeka at Boxhagener Platz. It's not huge but the staff actually help and the self-checkouts are bilingual by default. The pretzels there are also better, from a real bakery rather than the factory bags.

the netto self-checkout is basically a hazing ritual for living in berlin. if you ever need to use one again, look for the "einlösen" button when you scan your own bag, that's the part that always trips people up. also, avoid the one on frankfurter allee near the ringbahn, that machine has a personal vendetta against everyone.

honestly the best netto in the city is the one at u-paradies. it's huge, has actual space between aisles, and the self-checkouts are newer. still a bit dramatic but way less likely to make you abandon your pretzels. if you're near a city netto vs a normal one, the city ones tend to be more cramped so maybe skip those.

ngl the netto self-checkout thing is a rite of passage here. the trick is to just hit "weiter" whenever it beeps and pretend you know what you're doing. also, some of them only take card or coin, no notes, which is fun to figure out mid-transaction.

if you're near a kaiser's or a rewe city, go there instead. the aisles are wider and the self-checkouts are way more forgiving. plus, you can usually find someone who speaks english at the service desk.

Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
