So, I was chilling in Wassertorplatz Nord the other day, right? Beautiful park, the sun was shining... typical Berlin summer. Beautiful park, the sun was shining... typical Berlin summer. Anyway, I noticed this weird little patch of perfectly manicured grass, almost too perfect, surrounded by slightly overgrown areas. It looked almost... unnatural. Like someone had painstakingly sculpted it, but for what? There were no plaques, no markers, nothing. It just... was. Anyone else seen this oddly pristine bit of lawn? What's the deal?!

You're right, that spot is oddly conspicuous. I've walked through Wassertorplatz plenty of times and always assumed it was something left over from the park's redesign a few years back, maybe a failed attempt at a flower bed that just gets regular mowing out of habit. My bet is it's just the city's parks department being inconsistent, which is pretty on-brand for Berlin.

I've noticed that spot too, and I actually asked about it at the coffee stand on the corner of Wassertorstraße a couple years ago. The guy running it said it's where the old public toilet used to be before they tore it down in the early 2000s. The ground underneath was so compacted and full of concrete rubble that nothing else would really grow there, so they just seeded it with the hardiest grass they had and left it. The perfectly manicured look is just from the mower skipping over the uneven spots around it.

honestly i think it might be a memorial of some kind that never got a plaque. there's a few of those scattered around kreuzberg where the bezirk just kinda forgot to label things. if you look at the satellite view on google maps you can see the outline matches some old building foundations from before the park was built. prob just easier to keep mowing it than to dig it all up again
