Potsdamer Straße Mystery

It's such a change of pace from my quiet neighborhood. Near the Gedächtniskirche, I noticed a small, almost hidden alleyway, it looked like it led to a courtyard, but the entrance was obscured by overgrown ivy. Anyone know what's back there? I'm dying of curiosity. It felt like some kind of secret, a little portal to another time or place, honestly. I should of gone in, but I was late for a coffee date. Next time... I'm going in.

tbh i think i know the exact spot u mean. if it's the one just off the ku'damm side, past the old cinestar, that ivy covers a tiny hof with a faded 60s facade and a few artist studios. sometimes they leave the door open during the day, there's a ceramics chick who sells mugs for like 8 euros. not a speakeasy, but cool if u catch her in. also there's a dodgy kebab stand right around the corner that's been there since the wall, better than most tourist spots. next time just duck in, worst case it's a dead end and u lose two minutes.

kinda funny how everyone's got a different story for that ivy, almost like the alley changes depending on who's looking. my two cents: it's a dead end, but not the boring kind. there's a ventilation grate in the corner that hums when the u-bahn passes underneath, so u can feel the city moving below u while the street noise fades out. that's the real trick, standing still for a minute and letting the ground do the talking. if u want a better secret spot though, check the little door on the side of the Europa Center facing the church, the one with the brass plate that's too tarnished to read. it leads to a stairwell that smells like old cigarettes and goes up to a rooftop terrace that's technically public but nobody knows about. the view of the church ruins from up there at sunset is better than any courtyard. just don't tell too many people, it's already getting crowded on weekends.

There's a good chance you're talking about the same ivy-covered gap I've peered into a few times, and it's wild how everyone has a slightly different take on what's actually in there. My own look revealed a narrow courtyard with a cluster of dead potted plants and an old pushbike locked to a drainpipe, but the real curiosity is the faded sign above a back door that reads "Atelier Licht" in peeling gold lettering. Turns out a photographer named Gisela ran a studio there in the 60s, shot some of the early fashion catalogues for the KaDeWe, and her name still pops up in local archive listings if you dig around online. For the actual portal feeling, though, I'd skip the alley and walk over to the small passage behind the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial on the Fasanenstraße side, there's a quiet chapel courtyard there with a bronze relief of the old church before the bombing, and it's almost always empty. It won't have the mystery of the ivy, but it gives you that same hush in the middle of the city, and you can stand there and picture what the whole block looked like in the 30s.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
