I spent ages just wandering around outside, taking photos. Inside was equally beautiful, but the service...well, I couldn't understand a word! It was clearly a very moving experience for everyone else, but I felt completely out of the loop. My question is: are there usually pamphlets or something in English explaining the service, or is it just assumed everyone understands German?

yeah most smaller churches don't have english pamphlets tbh but some of the big touristy ones like berliner dom do have them. next time just go for the music or a quiet moment instead of the service itself

the berliner dom is prob your best bet for english materials, they're used to tourists. but for the smaller ones like st. hedwig's you're better off just soaking it in without trying to follow the sermon. honestly I've sat through a few services at the zionskirche where I didn't understand a word and it was still pretty nice, just let your mind wander and look at the details in the architecture. if you really want to understand what's happening, some of the english-speaking expat churches like st. george's anglican near friedrichshain do full services in english, might be worth checking out

fwiw the berliner dom has those little program sheets in english near the entrance, i grab one every time i drag friends through there. but for the smaller neighborhood churches like st. hedwig or the zion church you're prob out of luck, they just assume you're local. if you really want to follow along without the language barrier, the franzosische friedrichstadtkirche does some services in french and german on alternating weeks, still confusing but at least you can pick out some words if you know french

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
