I've heard so much about its intricate design and the way it shows time zones from all over. I'm a bit of a time nerd, always messing with different time zones in my head. I'm wondering though... Does it ever malfunction? Like, are there any stories about it being off, or major glitches? Or is it just perfectly precise, always? I really hope it's perfectly precise and not some kinda weird time vortex or something... that would be a bit freaky, lol.

yeah it's been on time for as long as i can remember, the mechanism is pretty overbuilt for a public clock. the only time i saw it off was during a construction project nearby when they had to shut off power to the square for a few hours, it was like 15 minutes behind the next day but they fixed it by noon. if you're a time nerd you might also like the little sundial in the garden behind the Rotes Rathaus, it's a 5 minute walk south from the clock and way less crowded

ngl it's been running smooth since the 60s, the thing is built like a tank. if you're a time nerd you'll get a kick out of the rotating cylinder that shows the 24 time zones, it's not just a static display. there's a tiny plaque on the side that mentions it was designed by a guy named Erich John, who apparently had to fight the east german government to keep it running during the cold war. grab a döner at Mustafa's on Mehringdamm after, it's a 20 minute u-bahn ride but worth it for the line

fwiw i've heard the world clock actually gets calibrated by the same guys who do the U-Bahn station clocks, so it's pretty reliable. there's a small control panel behind it that's usually locked but i once saw a technician open it up and it looked like a mess of wires and gears inside. if you're into time stuff you should check out the nearby Urania clock on An der Urania street too, it's less famous but has a cool 24-hour dial that's fun to decode

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
